At Kuwana, the grandparents lived with their first grandson and their youngest daughter who later gave birth to a baby. The partents brought their second child to Kashiwazaki, and by 1847 had three more children there. The grandfather and the father kept diaries almost every day and exchanged them occasionally. The present article first analyzes children's development and their immediate environments appearing in the second half of the diaries, and socio-cultural environments that surrounded the Watanabes between the period of 1839 to 1848,then it concludes with discussion of a few points relevant to developmental perspectives. Children's development and their immediate environments were analyzed with regard to eighteen aspects, which are characterized as follows. (1) A series of rituals related to child birth and development were celebrated by family members, relatives, and neighbors. (2) Timing of nursing the newborn varied between less than 24 hours after birth and two and a half days depending on the newborn's state. When the mother could not nurse her baby enough, supplementary nursing by neighbors and artificial feeding of starch soup with a small amount of sugar were used. Weaning was normally done when the next baby was born. (3) Toilet training began very early and ended in the first year or the second. (4) Very frequent bathing and frequent shaving away of the hair on a part of head were common practice. The latter practice was related to a medical belief. (5) Co-sleeping arrangements were made so that the youngest child slept with its mother in the same mattress, and the second youngest child normally with its father. (6) Physicians and medicines were rather easily available to them and were their first resort. In additon, they also depended on folk medicine and on magical rites. (7) Milestones of motor development were not different from those of the present day, but in some children, they were retarded due to serious illness and to thick clothes during winter time. (8) Children, especially boys, enjoyed various kinds of play activities in association with competent adults and with peers. (9) Sociocommunicative development was one of their main concerns. Adults were keenly interested in emergence of smiling, vocalization, and speech. (10) They interpreted children's imitation as expression of sociability. Adults were also interested in children's cognitive development as revealed by the questions children asked. (11) Boys began to learn reading of Chinese classics and writing around the age of six or seven. Education for girls was much less emphasized; they began to learn later and in less formal way than boys. (12) Curiosity about sex was not prohibited and was expressed freely by children under the age of seven. (13) One of the most important aspects of child treatment was development of self. Adults often used a behavior control strategy appealing to children's sense of self, and children developed consciouness of their outward appearence and personal characteristics. (14) The main part of children's social network consisted of their family members, relatives, neighbors, and peers. (15) Various aspects of changing sibling relations within a family were described, including siblings' interests in a baby as well as negative effects caused by its advent, quarrels caused by growing competence of the youngest child, and the latter's dependence on older siblings. The emerging sense of self of the youngest child influenced its behavior directed towards siblings, which in turn influenced the sense of self and behavior of older siblings. (16) Beginning around the age of four, children\"s peer relations developed, and then they belonged to children's groups in the community. (17) With regard to behavior control strategies, adults tended to verbally appeal to children's self. Through a series of social interactions that were extended over a long period of time, adults' expectations were internalized by children, who later regulated themselves spontaneously.…","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_description_5":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"国立情報学研究所で電子化したコンテンツを使用している。","subitem_description_language":"ja","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_9_identifier_60":{"attribute_name":"URI","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_type":"HDL","subitem_identifier_uri":"http://hdl.handle.net/2237/3751"}]},"item_9_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.18999/bulfep.34.189","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_9_publisher_32":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"名古屋大学教育学部","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_9_select_15":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_select_item":"publisher"}]},"item_9_source_id_7":{"attribute_name":"ISSN(print)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"03874796","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_9_text_14":{"attribute_name":"フォーマット","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"application/pdf"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"小嶋, 秀夫","creatorNameLang":"ja"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"6345","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"KOJIMA, Hideo","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"6346","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2018-02-16"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KJ00000137230.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"3.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KJ00000137230.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://nagoya.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2328/files/KJ00000137230.pdf"},"version_id":"cb12e41a-8b7b-4a52-96f0-d0b4f0ec2e96"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"<原著>桑名・柏崎日記に現れた児童発達と家族生活 (2)","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"<原著>桑名・柏崎日記に現れた児童発達と家族生活 (2)","subitem_title_language":"ja"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"1","path":["398"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2006-01-06"},"publish_date":"2006-01-06","publish_status":"0","recid":"2328","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["<原著>桑名・柏崎日記に現れた児童発達と家族生活 (2)"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-03-13T00:13:41.105870+00:00"}
