The subjects were the eighth graders and replied to a set of questionnaire containing the four occasions stated above. Comparing the means of the items among the four occasions, the following features were seen : students meeting with failure tried to attribute it to some causes more frequently than did students meeting with success irrespective of the two points in time (i. e. during or just after an exam, and after receiving an exam paper.); positive emotion of self-esteem in success was not so strong as negative one in failure also irrespective of the two points. Factor analysis was carried out for each of the four occasions, and the factor scores of each occasion were compared among three groups of school achievement (good achievers, middle achievers, poor achievers).
