"物理学と数学は、20世紀以前から、ニュートン力学と微積分、アインシュタインの一般相対論とリーマン幾何学、ゲージ理論とファイバー束といったように、互いに密接に刺激し合いながら相補的に発展してきた側面があります。この流れは21世紀になった現在も続いていますが、特に素粒子の超弦理論においてそれが顕著であり、ミラー対称性、超対称ゲージ理論、Dブレーンの研究を通じて、次々に新しい数学が生み出されています。もともと物理学と数学は研究対象がまったく異なる学問であり、このように自然法則の背後に美しい数学が見え隠れするのは決して自明でなく驚くべきことです。この宇宙が良い数学を採用している証とも言えましょう。この公開講座の授業では、この素晴らしい素粒子論と現代数学の関わりについて高校生に気分だけでも味わっていただこうと思い、時間をかけて意気込んで講演準備をしました。トポロジーの簡単な紹介からウィッテンのモース理論の話につなげるところが一番のオチだったのですが、参加者の半分が1年生でまだ微分も習っていないことが判明し(結局微分の定義から話しましたが)失敗に終わりました。。とは言え、参加者のみなさんは全日最後まで大変熱心に聴いてくださいました。この場をお借りして感謝申し上げます。私の所属する多元数理科学研究科は、前身は数学教室ですが物理分野の教員が15～20%ほど在籍していて、数学に近いところで物理学を研究をしている者にとって最高の環境です。数理物理学関連の授業も多く、私もこれまで解析力学、量子力学などを担当したことがあります。その際は、物理学と数学は本来別物で価値観や目標がまったく違うということを常に強調するようにしています。その上で、このような分野の勉強や研究を行うのは、この時代、実に楽しいことだと思います。21世紀はこれからもっともっと物理学と数学の交流が深まっていくものと確信しています。野望に満ちた若い人の参入をお待ちしております。",
