(1989)'s model of motivational processes by achievement goal tendencies in junior and senior high school students of China. As the first step of this study, three instruments : achievement goal tendencies, conceptions of ability and effort, and learning behavior made by Hayamizu et al. were tested by factor analyses. It was found that Chinese students can be described as having three kinds of achivement goal tendencies : two kinds of performance goal tendencies (one to gain approval and the other to advance in school) and learning goal tendency, three kinds conceptions of ability and effort : effort centered, ability centered and ability-effort relativity conception, and two learning behavior : noncompetition-competition oriented learning and comprehension-rote oriented learning. These results were identical with those of Japanese students by Hayamizu et al. Second, the scores of junior high school students on these sub-scales were compared with those of senior high school students. It was revealed that senior high school students were lower than junior high school stundents in learning goal tendency and performance goal tendency to gain good scores in school, and when students grow from junior to senior high school, effort centered conception decrease, ability centered and ability-effort relativity conception incrase, also change in learning beiavior was found. that is, senior high school students were much competitive than junior school students. Third, there was no sex difference on all the the sub-scales.
