In addition to a full-rotation task, in which a table was rotated 180° at a time, a step-rotation task, in which a table was rotated 45° step by step to 180°, was devised to examine the processes of spatial localization. In both tasks, children were shown an object hidden in one of two hiding locations on a turntable and then were asked to indicate the location of the object after the table was rotated. It was hypothesized that if children solve both tasks perceptually, the step-rotation task is easier than the full-rotation task and if children solve both tasks conceptually, the full-rotation task is easier than the step-rotation task. The results of two experiments showed that some children solved the step-rotation task easily than the full-rotation task and other children solved the full-rotation task easily than the step-rotation task.
