The technique, however, may be applied less destructive by indirect means. Some valuable ancient manuscripts and sutras have been transmitted to posterity in small cut fragments called kohitsugire. Sixteen scrolls of Shibunritsu sutra are kept in Shosoin. A bibliographical study on the documents kept in Shosoin supports the theory that the 16 scrolls are Shibunritu sutras brought to Japan by Priest Ganjin in 753. It may also be, however, that these scrolls left to posterity are copies. Radiocarbon dating, again, is too destructive to apply to artifacts such as the Shibunritsu in Shosoin. We therefore focused on a kohitsugire of Shibunritu. By comparing the texture, size of the characters, and spaces between the lines and characters with those of Shibunritsu in Shosoin, we determined that the two sutras share the same format. Microscope observation of the kohitsugire and Shibunritsu in Shosoin determined that both sutras are made from fiber of kozo and surface treated by the same uchigami technique. An impurity known as cubic crystals (clear square crystal) was also detected in both sutras. The bibliographical parameters and microscope observation show that the kohitsugire is a fragment of same series of Shibunritsu in Shosoin. We therefore measured the radiocarbon age of the kohitsugire by AMS. The age determined, 1323±21 BP, corresponds to 656–694, 700–708, and 747–765 cal AD. This finding indicates that the kohitsugire was written before Ganjin visited Japan.
