This research examines how information accumulated from previous studies reveals a theoretical framework from which to discuss the autonomous functions of these Christian universities. Previous studies in Japan have mainly focused on the period before and after the Annexation of Korea in 1910, in particular the process of creating higher educational institutions of Christianity, the curricula, and the gathering of ecumenical works by missionaries. In South Korea where there are many studies on Christian universities that highlight the contemporary significance of Christian higher education. Regarding studies that emphasize the historical development of these Christian higher educational institutions, most regard school formulation as the result of ethnic resistance to colonization policies. Research in English has clarified characteristics of Korean Christian higher educational institutions via comparisons with other Asian countries’ colonial experiences. Still, these research perspectives fail to describe a clear path of development for Korean higher education. Furthering previous studies, this research has three objectives: 1) to clarify the character and social position of Christian higher educational institutions, 2) to explore the background of the development and expansion of Christian higher educational institutions, and 3) to clarify the significance that Christian higher educational institutions had in the development of Korean higher education. As a research framework, this paper looks at four factors - nation, society, university and Christianity- and how each contributed to the development of higher educational institutes in Korea. Furthermore, we clarify the characteristics of Korean Christian higher educational institutes via a comparison with Japanese Christian universities, especially professional schools in the pre-war system, and discuss the continuity of development of Christian higher educational institutes from the Japanese colonial period.
