First, after reviewing the definitions and components of protective factors, we examined the relationship between resilience and protective factors. For protective factor research, it is necessary to conduct multilayered studies (on protective factors and resilience framework emphasizing the interactions between enabling factors and capacities operating at different levels of society) incorporating ecological and dynamic processes, such as by using longitudinal and case study methods. In Japan, there are few researches on the educational resilience; therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to promote educational resilience by clarifying the protective factors to prevent school maladaptation in the future. Second, I reviewed previous studies that focused on the individual traits as protective factors of school maladjustment (Big Five, hardiness) and school environment (extracurricular activities, school engagement). Previous studies suggested that individual trait factors and school environmental factors affect school adjustment. Besides, it is necessary to consider the process by which the interaction between personal characteristics and school environment influences adaptation in the future. We surmise that rolefulness (the sense of satisfaction that we experience in the roles) is related to the characteristics of individuals and the school environment and therefore need to verify the relationships among these factors. Third, previous research mainly used scales for measuring the status of school maladjustment such as a subjective adjustment scale from the viewpoint of person-environment fit. In the future, however, we need to examine the relationship between the protective factors and school maladjustment by using a scale that can measure the process that leads to school maladjustment, such as the Maladaptive Process Scale (consisting of maladjustment process according to the three factors: (1) lack of social competence, (2) lack of perceived self-acceptance, and (3) signs of school maladjustment). The results will contribute to finding effective factors preventing school maladjustment and of support for students at risk for maladjustment by school counselors. 内容記述 We conducted a literature review of protective factors to reduce instances of school maladjustment.
