According to Marshall, W. L., sex offenders have problems with attachment characterized by insecure attachment throughout early childhood to adulthood. This insecure attachment style is formed as a result of being unable to experience secure attachment to their parents in early childhood and thus failing to develop feelings of self-esteem and interpersonal skills necessary for building appropriate and intimate relationships with others. This leads to sexual assaults as they seek intimacy with others in an inappropriate way during adolescence and adulthood (Marshall, Hudson, & Hodkinson, 1993). Following this research, studies from various approaches have been conducted on sex offenders and their attachment styles. Those studies fall roughly into the following four categories: (1) Comparative research between a sex offender group and a general group (individuals from the general public who have not committed criminal offenses) (2) Comparative research between a sex offender group and a non-sexual offender group (offenders who have committed criminal offenses other than sexual offenses) (3) Comparative research between offense patterns among sex offenders (e.g. a rape offender group and a child-sex offender group) (4) Comparative research between attachment style types (three or four types) An overview of these studies indicates that they have not necessarily yielded consistent results. This is accounted for by the fact that it is impossible to compare the results against each other on an equal basis due to the intermingling of the four different approaches. Attachment styles form the foundation of each individual’s personality and affect every aspect including cognition, thinking, emotion, and behavior. This is true for sex offenders as well. To understand them and offer treatment, assessing their attachment styles in advance and grasping the issues each person has will be helpful. Considering the factors mentioned above, research on the attachment styles of sex offenders is expected to become increasingly important in the future.}, pages = {71--78}, title = {性犯罪者における愛着スタイル研究の動向と展望}, volume = {65}, year = {2018} }
