Moreover, the average age of contemporary stimulant drug users tends to be higher because these drugs are no longer used by only young people. Furthermore, accidents related to the use of synthetic drugs have happened recently in Japan. Nevertheless, the spread of drugs is still narrower in Japan compared to other countries. Stimulant drugs have harmful effects on the mind and the body because they affect and activate the reward system of the brain. Various assessments are conducted for evaluating substance use disorders. Among these assessments, one study used Rorschach techniques as a projective method. Fewer studies using projective methods have been conducted with stimulant drug users than with patients having mental illnesses in countries where these drugs are more widespread than Japan. We searched fordomestic and international literature and reviewed studies on problem substances. We identified possibly studies on substance use disorders by referring to “the List of literature on Rorschach technique in Japan,” and selecting Japanese studies with substance use-related titles by searching the Japanese literature in the Citation Information of NII (Cinii), as well as the English literature in PubMed databases. Thirty eight studies were selected for analysis in addition to the literature separately selected by the author. There were 20 studies in Japanese on Rorschach techniques for substance use disorders under the topic of stimulant drugs, which was the largest number. There were also 18 international studies on Rorschach techniques for substance use disorders. Among these studies, seven had mainly investigated Opioids (opium), which was the largest number. A broad overview of these domestic and international studies indicated certain differences based on the substance that was used. Nevertheless, there were common problems such as interpersonal relationships and reality-testing and thought disorder. Moreover, interpersonal relationship problems and pathology comparable to schizophrenia were also reported. In addition, the Rorschach techniques indicated certain remaining pathology even after the psychiatric symptoms have disappeared. Studies using the Rorschach techniques with stimulant drug users and the use of projective methods to investigate and identify clinical characteristics of synthetic drug users remain insufficient when considering the higher average age of stimulant drug users and the significant change in the spread of synthetic drugs in Japan. It would be desirable to further clarify the above issues in the future by studies using projective methods.
