Furthermore, a comparison of this medical college development to that of conditions for medical college education in Japan, we hope to clarify the details of the Chosen-era college’s establishment, curricula, student body, and resultant educational and research activities, and suggest that this college would become the model institute responsible for securing the foundation of private medical education in South Korea. In the first section, we explain the education system and the conditions of Chosen during the Japanese colonial period with a comparison of the professional school system at the same time in Japan. Under a discriminative colonial education policy, schools in Chosen were evaluated as lower level schools as compared to Japanese schools. Even at medical schools, only those undergoing Japanese courses were eligible to acquire a medical license without an examination. Private schools played an important role in medical fields during the early colonial period in the development of a system of professional schools. In the second section, we overview the process of the establishment of Severance Union Medical College and clarify its educational philosophy and curriculum. The curriculum analysis explains how colonial education aimed to encourage loyalty through subjects such as “ethics” and “Japanese,” and the prohibition of religious education. Ironically, Severance Union Medical College hoped to develop doctors seasoned in Christian philosophy by way of religious education in extracurricular classes. In the third section, we discuss the college’s graduates and research clarify the college’s meanings in Chosen society, and show that it produced many Korean doctors; a great contribution to medical development in Chosen accomplished through substantial research environments. In conclusion, we suggest that under the strict regulations for private schools during the colonial period, Severance Union Medical College maintained an advanced medical education for Korean students that contributed importantly to the training of Korean doctors and the development of medical research. We conclude that these educational activities built the foundation of medical education and research from Christian Universities in contemporary South Korea.}, pages = {29--41}, title = {日本統治下朝鮮における私学専門教育 : セブランス連合医学専門学校に関する比較教育史的考察}, volume = {65}, year = {2019} }
