In order to acquire knowledge from western countries and to revise their unequal treaties, the Edo Bakufu and the government of the Qing Dynasty sent a large number of students and missions abroad. At the time the primary way of traveling from the Orient to the Occident was passing through Saigon in Vietnam, Singapore, the Suez Canal, and finally arriving in Western Europe. As the link of connecting Orient and Occident, Southeast Asia, which had been colonized by the western world at the time, becomes the breach for observing western civilization and the apparatus of modern society. This paper investigates how the image of Southeast Asia was constructed during journeys bound for Europe by analyzing and comparing between diaries of Japanese and Chinese missions. Firstly, descriptions of daily scenery in Southeast Asia made by Japanese and Chinese missions are closely followed. Secondly, communication between Japanese and Chinese missions on the ship are analyzed. Thirdly, the difference of the occidental perspective between them is compared.
