@article{oai:nagoya.repo.nii.ac.jp:00027934, author = {竹腰, 敦 and Takekoshi, Atsushi}, journal = {IVY}, month = {Oct}, note = {In this paper I will examine the derivation and the licensing of ellipsis, especially the phenomenon that has been called sluicinig. The examples are given in (1). (1) a. Somebody just left - guess who _. b. They claimed they had settled on something, but it wasn't clear what_. There are two approaches to ellipsis : LF copy analysis and PF deletion analysis. Under the LF copy analysis,elliptical expressions are inserted into syntactic structure as empty categories. They are reconstructed at LF by copying the content of the antecedent. On the other hand, under the PF Deletion analysis, elliptical expressions are inserted into syntactic structure in the same way as non-elliptical expressions. Elliptical expressions are elided at PF under certain conditions. The PF deletion analysis was adopted in earlier versions of generative grammar. In 80's the LF copy analysis became influential. But recently Chomsky (1995) adopted the PF deletion analysis and many linguists claims that the PF deletion analysis is superior to the LF copy analysis. But most of the proponents of the PF deletion analysis deal with VP ellipsis, but not sluicing. So, in this paper I claim that sluicing also supports the PF deletion analysis. Many proponents of the LF copy analysis pointed out problems with the PF deletion analysis of sluicing. But as I will show in this paper the problems can be solved under the theory of ellipsis in Chomsky (1995). This means that Chomsky's theory is on the right track as far as ellipsis is concerned. But there are some unclear points in Chomsky's assumption about the derivation of ellipsis. Therefore, I will elaborate the PF deletion approach, clarifying the unclear points.}, pages = {53--71}, title = {間接疑問縮約の派生について : LFコピー分析対PF削除分析}, volume = {30}, year = {1997} }
