The incident made sensational news and exposed a dilemma facing reporters in modem society: which is better, to produce colorful and provocative news, or to report the truth literally? Fabrication, news production and the reporter's dilemma - these are points at which Elizabethan England, Othello and modern society come into contact. As Paul Voss points out, England in the 1590s witnessed a news revolution and a great and durable interest in news grew in that period. The end of the sixteenth century marks the birth of the \"news society\" in which a large quantity of news is produced/received. Othello (1603~1604) inherits the interest and reshapes the dynamism of the news society as its structural principle. This paper aims to analyze news production and reception in Othello, referring to the media and celebrities today. Venice was the locus of trade between the west and the east, and the flow of commodities as well as people entailed the flow of news. In the news society of Venice, people give priority to reports, news and public opinion. What others say and how they are reported truly affect their sense and behavior. Othello is a typical character who lives through the media in Venice. His status as a celebrity makes him the focus of public attention, and thereby he not only enjoys acclamation but is susceptible to a barrage of slander. It is Iago who makes use of the celebrity Othello for his journalistic design. As a reporter in the play he shares with modern journalists three traits: curiosity, a penetrating insight into news value and commitment to sensationalism. What is more, he knows that reputation is arbitrary and could be altered by managing news, which enables him to control Othello, who regards reputation and fame as essential to himself. First Iago appears in the play as an \"honest\" reporter who tells the truth, though he actually reports false news. Not content with the task of reporter, he embarks on fabricating a fact like Glass. The fact he plans to make up is a love affair between Cassio and Desdemona. Here we can surmise his ambition: since the Turkish fleets have gone, the news of the impending war does not sell any more; accordingly, people demand other news and someone needs to produce it at any cost to satisfy them; it is likely that the news of the Othello family s turmoil will be marketable since the couple is famous. Eventually, Iago aims to produce news on his own and become a director of the ongoing events. Othello never doubts Iago's reports on his partner's infidelity. There are three reasons for his credulity. Firstly, Othello is very sensitive to people's remarks which could tarnish his fame: the rumor of being a cuckold would be fatal for him, so he cannot dismiss it easily. Secondly, he does not interpret news critically and accepts all the reports and inferences as truth. Finally, Othello never checks the news source of Iago's reports and listens carefully to others' reports. As a result, he tortures himself with an imaginary slander,\"a cuckold.\" In the final scene Emilia, a literally honest reporter, tells the truth and the reporter Iago loses credit. However, his plan as producer/director is accomplished in that a shocking scene of murder and suicide is presented on the stage. The news of the event would be reported in Venice and people would talk about Othello the murderer: in this sense, we can conclude that he is a victim of the news society. Whatever responses Venetians should make, we the readers/audience also have responsibility for reporting the event, the truth and Othello. Since we were not allowed to enter into the world of the drama as fact-checkers and couldn't save Othello from ruin, we now need to \"speak of him as he is\" as a witness.
