However, with the rise of the movement, male identity and the notion of the ideal man in American history and literature should be re-examined through the prism of the male perspective, as these contexts shed light on the long neglected, but vital, field of \"manhood\" in gender studies. In this essay, I first introduce the history of the Men's Liberation Movement and its impact on academia. Second, I re-interpret US history, showing how politics and the nation-building experience created a\"myth of manhood,\" first analyzing white male writers' growing anxieties as expressed through their literature, then by examining the works of male minorities, including gays, especially their response to their ambiguous identity, as characterized by a stronger identification within but weaker identification outside of their particular community. An examination of manhood, as depicted in American literary scenes from the Colonial period to the present, reveals that traditional manhood has been valued for its social contributions and successes, and the literature has recorded the history of men's struggle with the notion of ideal manhood. In Colonial literature, religion played a significant role in the creation of an American Adam in the New World. During the period of Republicanism, the ideal of the \"self-made man,\" as presented in biographies and autobiographies, helped the newly born nation become politically independent in both urban and rural contexts. The 19th century witnessed the rise of the self-made man as expressed by the ideal of the \"American dream,\" gradually defined by economic success in an increasingly colonialist as well as capitalist America. However, during this period, many men began to experience anxiety over the traditional manhood as presented in Huckleberry Finn. This unresolved anxiety was inherited by the literary characters of the next century, as the anti-hero of the Lost Generations assumed the role of protagonist, while the traditional masculine hero took on the role of antagonist in the modernist world; the new literary heroes struggled with their divided selves. Postmodern American literature ultimately reconciles white males to their multiple selves, enabling them to coexist. Postmodern America also accommodates a much wider range of literary voices, reflecting an increasingly complex national character with respect to gender, race, ethnicity, and class. In the following section, I introduce Jewish-American, African-American, Native-American, Chicano, and Asian-American stereotypes, and examine each group's corresponding response: each seeking, through its literature, to define America, and its own particular identity, from the perspective of a weaker male identity. The literary history of American manhood illustrates the submission, confusion, and eventual awakening of men of various backgrounds from a sort of socio-political gender hypnotism. Through \"man speaking of man,\" we will hear new voices reveal a hidden American literary history of manhood.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_description_5":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"本稿は2006年度名古屋大学英文学会クリスマスセミナー(2006年12月22日)における講演に基づくものである。","subitem_description_language":"ja","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_9_publisher_32":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"名古屋大学英文学会","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"The society of english literature and linguistics Nagoya University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_9_select_15":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_select_item":"publisher"}]},"item_9_source_id_7":{"attribute_name":"ISSN(print)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0914-2266","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"瀬名波, 栄潤","creatorNameLang":"ja"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"91483","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Senaha, Eijun","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"91484","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2019-05-20"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"ivy_40_107.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.0 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"ivy_40_107.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://nagoya.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/28085/files/ivy_40_107.pdf"},"version_id":"b54f1154-8291-4345-ac36-9e532802ea33"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"男が男を語る : 古くて新しいジェンダーの話","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"男が男を語る : 古くて新しいジェンダーの話","subitem_title_language":"ja"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"1","path":["2405"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2019-05-20"},"publish_date":"2019-05-20","publish_status":"0","recid":"28085","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["男が男を語る : 古くて新しいジェンダーの話"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-01-16T04:20:26.184214+00:00"}
