This paper aims to analyze the development of the definite article, and gives it the principled account within the framework of generative grammar and the theory of grammaticalization put forward by Hopper and Traugott (2003). Most previous studies (Watanabe (2009), Gelderen (2004, 2011) among others) argue that demonstratives in OE occupied the specifier position of DP, and were reanalyzed as the head element during ME. Such analysis predicts that both specifier and head positions would be filled by demonstratives in a transitional period, but no such instance is attested in the investigation based on YCOE and PPCME2. Thus, following Ibaraki (2009), it is assumed that the position of demonstratives has been the head of DP, not the specifier of DP. Roberts and Roussou (2003) argue that the development of Romance determiners out of demonstratives was caused by morphological reduction, but this seems to be dubious for the case of the English definite article the because demonstratives could be used as the definite article even in the period OE, when inflection was still rich (Mitchell (1985)). This means that there is no direct connection between the development of the definite article and morphological reduction. Also, Watanabe (2009) attempts to analyze the development of the definite article by a parametric shift, but he does not provide an account for what caused the parametric shift nor discusses Regress problem (Roberts (2007)), which must be considered when we deal with issues related to grammaticalization. Gelderen (2011) analyzes the development of the definite article in terms of Feature Economy, but there still remain some proble1ns; for exa1nple, it is not clear how the change of features along with Feature Econon1y is related to the positional change of demonstratives from Spec to head. After all, no previous study captures nor analyzes the properties of the development of the definite article. Following the assumption made above that the position of demonstratives has been the head of DP throughout the history of English, this paper proposes that demonstratives in OE which occupy the head Dem position have been reanalyzed as the D element. What caused the reanalysis here is semantic bleaching (Hopper and Traugott (2003)), that is, the loss of the [i-deixis] feature of demonstratives, which is due to the radical increase of the use of the unified form pe together with leveling of inflections.
