Section 2 analyzes the use of ne in paratactic negation with adversative predicates. Song's (2013) system of NPI licensing is applied to the analysis of paratactic negation with adversative predicates. The mechanism is as follows. A negative operator is generated at C and bears an [i-Neg] feature and a [u-Foc] feature. It enters into an Agree relation with ne which bears a [u-Neg] feature and an [i-Foc] feature. The two elements enter into an Agree relation ·with each other and the derivation converges. Section 3 provides some diachronic observations on paratactic negation with adversative predicates and Jespersen's Cycle based on the data obtained from some historical corpora. Paratactic negation with adversative predicates is attested from ca. 950 to ca. 1500, and the second stage of Jespersen's Cycle in which both ne and not are used to express negation is observed from ca. 1100 to ca. 1500. It is suggested that the loss of paratactic negation with adversative predicates is due to the loss of Stage Two ne. In the history of English, not did not replace ne to occur in paratactic negation with adversative predicates. This can be explained based on the mechanism proposed in section 2. The negative operator of the adversative predicate bears an [i-Neg] feature and a [n-Foc] feature, and unlike ne, not ·which bears an [i-Neg] feature and a [n-Foc] feature cannot enter into an Agree relation with the negative operator.
