In particular, a question will arise concerning the development of the progressive passive: what triggered the emergence of the progressive passive at the end of the eighteenth century and the loss of passivals in the nineteenth century. This paper aims to account for the development of the progressive passive in the history of English with respect to the development of imperfective aspect. Cowper and Hall (2013) provide us with the syntactic structures of passivals and the progressive passive respectively and argue that the development of the progressive passive out of passivals was caused by the split of a functional head, Voice-Aspect (VAsp), into Voice and Aspect at the end of the eighteenth century. However, they do not provide an account of the theoretical motivation of this change nor discuss how VAsp arose in the first place. Particularly, the former problem can be solved by postulating feature syncretism proposed by Roberts and Roussou (2003) and semantic bleaching, whereas the solution to the latter is unclear. This paper suggests that passivals should be classified into three types: type (i) in ME with existential be+ adjectival present participle, type (ii) in EModE with copula be+ verbal present participle of passive meaning, and type (iii) since the late seventeenth century with copula he + verbal present participle of passive and imperfective meaning. We argue that unlike type (i) and (ii), type (iii) is the direct origin of the progressive passive and includes -ing as a voice and aspectual marker. This paper assumes that type (iii) appeared as an analogy to have perfect constructions which have been clearly distinguished from the simple past tense since the sixteenth century. The rise in frequency of the progressive caused -ing to undergo semantic bleaching and become a pure imperfective aspectual marker at the end of the eighteenth century. This change also caused the introduction of passive be. This paper focuses on the diachronic changes of passivals and argues that type (i) and type (ii) passivals are semantically and syntactically different from type (iii) passival proposed by Cowper and Hall (2013) and type (iii) passivals is the direct origin of the progressive passive. What caused the emergence of the progressive passive is the appearance of -ing as a voice and aspectual marker and its semantic bleaching that followed. The former occurred in the late seventeenth century because of the establishment of imperfective aspect as an analogy to that of perfective one. The latter was caused by the rise in frequency of the progressive in the eighteenth century and followed the introduction of passive be.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_publisher_32":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"名古屋大学英文学会","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"The society of english literature and linguistics Nagoya University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_9_select_15":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_select_item":"publisher"}]},"item_9_source_id_7":{"attribute_name":"ISSN(print)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0914-2266","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"本多, 尚子","creatorNameLang":"ja"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"91601","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Honda, Shoko","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"91602","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2019-05-27"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"ivy_49_21.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.0 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"ivy_49_21.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://nagoya.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/28160/files/ivy_49_21.pdf"},"version_id":"373f1c60-324b-4040-b3bf-67a7a49550ff"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Passivals から進行受動態へ : 英語史における統語変化","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Passivals から進行受動態へ : 英語史における統語変化","subitem_title_language":"ja"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"1","path":["2414"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2019-05-27"},"publish_date":"2019-05-27","publish_status":"0","recid":"28160","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Passivals から進行受動態へ : 英語史における統語変化"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-01-16T04:20:23.095051+00:00"}
