It was argued that the condition that licenses past participles as prenominal modifiers was changed from 'the base verb must be a transitive verb' to 'the noun modified must be a theme argument of the base verb' and that the trigger for this change was the emergence of a large number of ergative verbs during ME and EModE, which have both transitive and intransitive variants, being theme assigners in either case.
