Specifically, this study targets 644 schools accredited by NASM, the largest professional musical accreditation group in the United States, and classifies their organizational structure into various types to construct frameworks for spurring the development of research on higher music education (HME). As a result of reviewing 644 schools in terms of internal organizations providing music programs in addition to institutional types, the study was able to classify organizational structures into nine types.
