While most studies forecast the direct economic impacts of the completed infrastructure initiative, the indirect economic and environmental impacts from the mere construction of the BRI have been overlooked. This study makes an important contribution to the literature by estimating the indirect economic and environmental impacts arising from the promotion of the BRI. The main findings can be summarised as follows: the BRI will have positive economic impacts for iron ore exporting countries. The magnitude and distribution of these positive indirect economic benefits is influenced by China's steel production trade relations, supply capacity, economic growth and stimulus policies. The increases in carbon emissions resulting from the construction of the BRI in particular the burning of coal and use of steel furnace methods is substantial.}, pages = {9--26}, title = {The Indirect Economic and Environmental Effects of China's Belt and Road Initiative}, volume = {67}, year = {2020} }
