In addition to these two French philosophers, Japanese research philosopher Kobayashi Yasuo examines the perspective of Foucault from the context of the sacred aspect of Manet's paintings. In this thesis, we will develop Kobayashi’s interpretation in order to understand the importance of the connection between Manet’s perception and the “sacred” aspect in Manet’s paintings while creating a basis for our understanding by using Bataille’s explanation. Foucault understands Manet’s paintings as the following: It displays the material aspect of the canvas that had been hidden behind the representation of paintings in European tradition. In other words, Foucault thinks that Manet presents the work of art as an “object” through various technics. Kobayashi criticizes this point: He thinks that it is the idea of “nothingness” which represents the “sacred characteristic” and the form of beauty in modern society that Manet tries to express through his paintings. We try to further analyze this point by using Bataille’s thinking in regard to the connection between Manet’s perception and the sovereignty in his paintings. Bataille thinks that the paintings of Manet expresses the “sacred horror” of the “presence” of an object excluding the mythical world that traditional paintings had represented. In other words, it is not the mythical world that Manet’s paintings wish to express, rather it is the current perception of Manet that is the goal, a point in which Bataille views as a sacred aspect.
