The focus is on the interaction that Menéndez Pelayo had with Arabists for his research on Islam. First, the author indicates Pelayo’s relevance to Islamic studies by analyzing the historiographical vision reflected in La ciencia española, and the emphasis that he placed on the Spanish heterodoxy. In order to visualize his position in Arabism, we compare this vision to mentions of Pelayo observable in the catalog of epistles exchanged between foreign scholars and Asín Palacios, a Spanish Arabist. Then, the author analyzes the epistles exchanged between Pelayo and his disciple, Asín, to examine their specific contributions to Spanish Islamic studies, situating their research exchange in the unstable background of late nineteenth century Spain.
