They are usually regarded as synonymous words. Based on spontaneous conversation, this paper compares the use of kedo and danshi in spoken Japanese and Chinese. It is found that, both kedo and danshi can be used as adversative conjunction and discourse marker, but kedo can also be used as a connective paiticle or a sentence final particle, which is not equivalent with danshi in Chinese. When kedo is used as a conjunction in an inverted sentence, it can be regarded as a synonymous word with suiran. When it is used as a conjunction expressing introduction, it does not have synonyinous words in Chinese. When it is used as a connective or a discourse marker, it differs frorn danshi in terms of frequency of use, although it is semantically equivalent with danshi.
