Recently, support for JSL children in “scattered areas” has become more and more important. However, problems concerning JSL children in these areas have been discussed only from the view point of their Japanese language education. Support for these children needs to be discussed also from the perspective of plurilingualism, human mobility and dynamicity. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the movement of a particular JSL child to and in Japan and the change of her self-consciousness about identity. This was done through the interview of Yuri, who moved from the Philippines to Japan and between a “scattered area” and an “unscattered area” in Japan. When she attended an elementary school in a “scattered area”, I taught her Japanese and other school subjects. I had opportunities to interview her. I analyzed the recorded and transcribed data of the interviews qualitatively to find out how her self-consciousness changed after she had moved to Japan and enrolled to an elementary school where there were no other JSL children. As a result, the following two points were revealed. First, Yuri’s self-consciousness built upon experiences in the Philippines underwent changes in the course of her adaptation to the new environment. Particularly, change in her relationship with other children is notable. Second, in the process of adaptation, Yuri’s consciousness of the Japanese language also changed. In conclusion, these observations suggest that support of JSL children in “scattered areas” is especially important.
