That learning is conducted “as a whole” is a perspective that reflects a consensual process based on curriculum research that has interpreted career education from the vantage point of a whole-learning experience. This research examines issues regarding Japanese high school career education from two approaches: 1) historical trends in career education and, 2) the genealogy of career education research. The first approach examines crucial issues in the policy and practice of career education, and the latter analyzes the genealogy of theoretical research, in particular, how it relates to the practice research of career education.This study’s results suggest that although ample theoretical research is presented in the curriculum, there is insufficient research that can be utilized in actual curriculum design. Although many practical studies are presented in the curriculum, there lacks an overall framework to link the theoretical to the practical. Thus, this incongruency between practice and theory is problematic. In order to address this gap, a systematic theoretical framework that allows better interaction between the two teaching environments; one that encourages comparison and referencing, is in order.
