This paper describes the general theory of sensitivity analysis and its application to hydrocarbon chemistry. The Green function method is extensively studied and used to develop a sensitivity analysis program. In particular, the pyrolysis and oxidation of acetaldehyde as well as the oxidation of n-butane are studied in detail and the usefulness of sensitivity analysis is shown in comparison with a simplified mechanism and a full mechanism of acetaldehyde combustion.
