Catalytic activities between ion-exchange resins and dissolved electrolytes were compared for hydrolysis of esters, such as methyl and ethyl acetates, diethyl succinate and ethyl formate. Generally, the catalytic activity of free acid was lower than that of gel-type resins while it was higher than that of macroporous type resins. The effects of mass transfer resistances on overall reaction rates and selectivities were investigated in batch reactors. As the particle sizes increased, the reaction rates and selectivities were decreased due to intraparticle diffusion resistances. Two models, that is, one realistic and one simplified, were compared with each other. Cylindrical pellets with diameters of 3 and 5 mm were made to reduce both the pressure drop in a fixed-bed and the intraparticle diffusion resistance. The performance of reactors were studied on a recycle reactor and a tube-wall reactor.
