One of the most important key words in the study is the word ‘critical’ or ‘criticism’. The target of previous studies of ‘criticism’in Media Literacy has only been to investigate the intentions of media producers and their biases. Very little has been done to examine the relations between the power and signification by the media. This study aims to examine these significant relations and clarify the concept of‘critical’by critically reviewing the practice of English Language Teaching (ELT) in college. The reason why I conducted a study on Media Literacy in regards to ELT is due to the term ‘globalization’and its relation to the spread of English in the world. In ELT, I believe that it is meaningful to consider the potential problems which come about when trying to make Media Literacy successful in the classroom. This study consists of three stages; firstly, to reconsider the‘critical’viewpoint, the theoretical core of Media Literacy; secondly, to discover what kind of problems appear in exercising ELT combined with Media Literacy; thirdly, to search for undetectable ideas of‘criticism’which are apt to be passed over in mass media when considering globalization. My wish is that such study will help strengthen the theoretical base of‘criticism’when teaching Media Literacy in the classroom.}, pages = {113--122}, title = {メディア・リテラシーの批判的検討1 : 英語教育の実践を分析対象にして}, volume = {27}, year = {2004} }
