There is now a vast assortment of writing about immigrants for us to consider, including many pieces written by those who themselves are immigrants. There are some fundamental questions to be explored: What is immigration? What is a homeland? Who is the rightful owner of a nation and how can we define national identity? What is the narrative of the United States as an immigrant nation? Do the narratives on immigrants by immigrant writers add some force to the literature of a multicultural nation? In the United States, there is an immigrant writer of Indian origin who has endeavored to answer those questions. The United States of America is a country of cultural hybrids who bring together dissimilar literary traditions, genres, and modes. Understanding this helps us to connect the scattered dots of seen and unseen, heard and unheard reality, to make the lines that form the plane that is the United States. Immigrant writers play a significant role in uniting the dots and making the lines. Keeping these issues in mind, in my reading of a text from what is known as the South Asian immigrant, an idea-showing Americans rewritten America-will be subjected to close study. This paper looks at a novel by Bharati Mukherjee, an immigrant from India, The Holder of the World(1993). In the novel , the heroines are re-incarnated and re-collect historical actuality in the process of making their own worlds. In Mukherjee’s words,“her intention”is disturbing what came before and “her mission”is exploring new worlds ( “Holders of the Word” Sec.1). In an interview right after she published The Holder of the World, Mukherjee explained her fascination with writing, attacking the thoughts expressed in George Steiner’s “Europeanization of America,”“I’m interested in showing Americans an America they haven’t seen before. The phrase that I have used in an essay is‘making the familiar exotic, and the exotic familiar.’I can show you Philadelphia in ways you haven’t seen before because I am a writer with a unique sense of looking at things”(“An Interview with Bharati Mukherjee,” Mosaic 7). She, claiming her right to be an American of Indian origin and refusing to be classified as an Indian-American, attempts to intrude into the history of the American establishment and to involve herself in the myth of the American origin. In another interview, when speaking about The Holder of the World, she insisted that“this is not a book about India, but about the making of America and American national mythology”(“ Holders of the Word” Sect. 96). In order to find an alternative meaning embedded in the fragments of the personal and public history disturbed by Mukherjee, my study uses a trans-cultural perspective that reaches beyond the constitutive assumptions of a single specialization, and focuses on the position of unfamiliar cultural and historical“truth.” Ⅰ","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.18999/forids.26.27","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_9_publisher_32":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"Graduate School of International Development.
