内容記述 The aim of the present paper is to develop a contrastive analysis of tense and aspect of participles - morphological adjective participles and indeclinable adverbial participles(or gerund)- in Lithuanian and Russian, concentrating specifically on their semantic and functional interpretation. We saw that the participial systems of Lithuanian and Russian are typologically similar in possessing four basic types, so-called present and past active and passive participles. However, the temporal expressions of these participles in Lithuanian and Russian are considerably different. In Russian there is a clear tendency to align the tense with aspect - past with perfective, present with imperfective, and the formation and usage of participles are more restricted than in Lithuanian. On the other hand, in Lithuanian participles are generally formed without an aspectual restriction and play a greater role in tense-aspect system of this language. The comparison with Russian allows us to expose the multiple meanings and functions of Lithuanian participles even more clearly than it would appear if Lithuanian was viewed by itself. In diachronic perspectives, Slavic languages have developed verbal aspect, which are more systematic(grammaticalized)than Baltic. It might be presumed that the developmental tendencies of verbal aspect have close relation to the reduction of functional load of the tense forms of participles.
