Based on the field research of three die and mold companies in Chubu region, I found that those companies had operated a design process from the establishment of their foreign subsidiaries. It contrasts with the Japanese automobile and electronics companies that developed technologies step by step in their foreign subsidiaries. One of the reasons is that skills in the die and mold industry have changed historically because new technologies such as NC machines and CAD/CAM software were introduced. The old skills by craftsmen have been divided into the three processes of design, manufacturing and try-out according to the field research. There are three types of skills in each process. The first is the one substituted by NC machines and CAD/CAM software, which can be transferred internationally. The second is the one still needed even after using NC machines or CAD/CAM software, which can be transferred with Japanese engineers or technicians very gradually. The third is newly acquired after using NC machines and CAD/CAM software.
