The media presented in the country's four official languages, namely English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil may be defined as both ethnic media and national media. However, in the process of such media environment being formed, the government controlled media and constrained freedom of speech for political stability, and the means for information acquisition was inevitably limited and some language usage of the media were “appropriately”changed. The Straits Times, a leading national English newspaper, contains Forum pages reflecting opinions and arguments from not only ordinary Singaporeans, but also from some government officials and academic professionals. Through the analysis of their voices over the issue of racial harmony, I conclude that this multi-directional dialogue has a great potential and can be effective for the future promotion of multicultural understanding and coexistence between peoples with different ethnic backgrounds in Singapore.}, pages = {75--87}, title = {多民族社会におけるメディアーシンガポールの多文化理解/共生に関する考察ー}, volume = {32}, year = {2006} }
