The media presented in the country's four official languages, namely English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil may be defined as both ethnic media and national media. However, in the process of such media environment being formed, the government controlled media and constrained freedom of speech for political stability, and the means for information acquisition was inevitably limited and some language usage of the media were “appropriately”changed. The Straits Times, a leading national English newspaper, contains Forum pages reflecting opinions and arguments from not only ordinary Singaporeans, but also from some government officials and academic professionals.
