Such phenomena are very important for forest ecology in theory as well as for sylviculture and for foresttaxation in practice.  This paper aims to elucidate the influence of the human activities on the forest vegetation of the montane zone in the central Japan. Samples were collected in the Nagoya University Forest and its neighbouring forests.  On the whole it is admitted that the distribution of plant species in a limited location is determined by the physical and chemical property of the soil which is different according to its topographical situation. Some 200 species of woody and herbaceous plants were sampled and their distributions were investigated relating to the topography of the mountain side, say valley, mid-slope and mountain ridge.  The species distribution of the primary forest and that of secondary were compared, so that the transition of the species was ascertained. To classify the types of the topographical species distribution, a kind of triangular coordinate method was introduced. In terms of this coordinate we could easily recognize the migration of each plant species on the mountain side and deduce the effects of the human impact on its vicissitudes.  In accompany with the plot samplings soil survey were conducted to classify the topographical types of the mountain slope.
