As to sawing property, cutting force and the quality of sawn surface were examined. On planning property, cutting force, surface quality, cutting accuracy and tool wearing characteristics were investigated. Cencerning property in orthogonal cutting, only cutting force was determined. A) Sawing property (green and air dried lumber) A-1 Cutting force increased with specific gravity under the condition of larger value of feed per tooth (Fig.1). However, under the smaller value of it, cutting force seems to be scarcely dependent upon specific gravity (Fig. 2). It is assumed that under the smaller value of feed per tooth, friction force between saw blade and woolly grain on the sawn surface, which is apt to occur with Southern hardwood, put the normal correlation of cutting force to specific gravity into confusion because of the smaller values of cutting force. A-2 Cutting force linearly increased with feed per tooth in all species (Fig. 3) and the rate of increment increased with specific gravity (Fig. 4). A-3 Grade of woolly grain was independent of specific gravity (Fig. 6). It was observed clearly in the timbers with interlocked grain of a high grade. B) Planing property (air dried lumber) B-1 Cutting force increased with specific gravity in both up and down milling. However, the coefficient of correlation in up milling was smaller than that in down milling because of the occurrence of advanced splitting and its irregularity in the former. B-2 Roughness of planed surface was measured by knife edge type stylus with the edge of 0.7 mm width in order to eliminate the influence of cellular structure. The roughness decreased with the increase of the specific gravity, but the coefficient of correlation was very small. The coefficient of friction between sponge and machined surface linearly decreased with the increase of the specific gravity (Fig. 10). B-3 As to cutting accuracy, cutting error was investigated. In this study cutting error means the sum of elastic and plastic recoveries of machined surface (W_T, Table 10). Using the tool witch had a worn portion (edge recession : R_f = 25μm) in the center part of the cutting edge, cutting errors on the surfaces machined with worn and unused sharp portions were compared. The surface machined with the latter indicated no recovery. Cutting error of the worn edge decreased with the increase of the specific gravity (Fig. 13, 14). The relationship between edge recession (R_f) and cutting force (F_v) vertical to the feed direction was also investigated incidentally. F_v linearly increase with R_f in all species (Table 9 and Fig. 11). The value of “a” in the empirical formula F_v = aR_f for above-mentioned relationship increased with specific gravity of test species (Fig.12). B-4 Species containing silica crystals more than 0.1% in weight severely wore the cutting edge. In such a species, edge recession of cutting edge was independent of specific gravity. There were three types of wearing pattern of tool face according to the machining properties of the materials cut TypeⅠ,II and III (Fig. 20). In Type I wear (depression) zone was observed at some distance from the cutting edge and in Type Ⅱ the wear overspread the neighbourhood of cutting edge. the values of R_f of Type Ⅰgroup were less than those of Type II group with a few exceptions for some species cut (Table 10 and Fig. 15). It seems that one of the causes for the TypeⅠwearing is the occurring of micro advance splitting ahead of cutting edge in the materials tested. The fluctuation of parallel force in orthogonal cutting was larger in such species than in the species causing Type II wearing. C) Orthogonal cutting (air dried lumber) Cutting force linearly increase with specific gravity.
