(4)) ; and the final yield Y(t)(=W(t)ρ) becomes constant independent of density ρ. It was concluded that these two assumptions are in conflict with each other, in case the logistic theory of plant growth is applied to the density effect in self-thinning populations. However, a functional relationship between realized density and initial density is provided for self-thinning in the logistic theory of plant growth. Considering the functional relationship, the logistic theory of plant growth was reconstructed to be applicable for the density effect in self-thinning populations. The present theory consists of the following three basic assumptions : the yield y follows a general logistic equation (Eq. (16)) ; the law of constant final yield holds ; and there exists a functional relationship between realized density ρ and initial density ρ_1 (Eq.(2), Fig. 3). The resultant reciprocal equation of the C-D effect (Eq.(26)) was consistent with one of the two assumptions from which the functional relationship of realized density to initial density is derived. Although the reciprocal equation in self-thinning populations was the same in form as that (Eq. (1)) in nonself-thinning populations, the coefficient A_t (Eq. (24)) in self-thinning populations was quite different in implication from the coefficient A (Eq. (11)) in nonself-thinning populations. The present conclusion is supported by the empirical fact that the reciprocal equation is discernible in not only nonself-thinning but also self-thinning populations.
