Alongside this development is the growing polarization between the two camps leading the microfinance industry, namely: the institutionists and the welfarists. The focal point of the dichotomy of views between the two camps is the issue of a trade-off between financial self-sufficiency and reaching the poor, more popularly known as the mission drift debate. This paper examines whether the abandonment of the poor is an expected outcome of the transformation process.
