Bangladesh is currently facing the problem of arsenic contamination of groundwater, due in large part to the frequent use by the local people.\\\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the arsenic mitigation projects have so far promoted community-based management of safe water in order to overcome this crisis, instead of the family-based management options. However, in spite of the provision of these options for supplying and managing “safe water ”, their remains the difficulty of sharing the concept of “safety” between the project staff and the local villagers. Even though many studies have found a sense of community in rural Bangladesh to be rather weak, much of the responsibility of supplying and maintaining “safe water ” is left to the communities. This paper examines dilemmas in these situations by means of project ethnography.
