First, characteristics of the United States of America and those of the United Kingdom were examined as examples of countries where action on child abuse has achieved progress. Next, future tasks regarding child abuse countermeasures in Japan were examined in the framework of the revised Japanese Child Abuse Prevention Law and in comparison to the countermeasures taken in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the legal area, the need for active involvement of the legislature in child abuse issues and issues relating to the protective procedures were pointed out. This was followed by a discussion of issues relating to the psychological care of the children in protective custody and those relating to assistance to the children’s guardians who committed abuse. In addition, the need for a program to reintegrate families and the issues concerning societal care were pointed out from the perspective of permanent care. From the point of view of child abuse prevention, the need for community-based welfare assistance, including support offered to families with raising of children, was mentioned. Based on the fact that a number of children who were taken into protective custody and placed in foster care had been neglected, the importance of research on the impact of neglect on children was suggested.
