 note = {In this paper, we try to answer the question of whether the market-oriented reform that began in 1978 should be responsible for the increasing income inequality in China. Firstly, the paper describes five features of changes in income inequality in China. We found that income inequality is increasing in all aspects and education plays more important role in income determination. Secondly, in the paper we compare several judgements and assessments on income inequality in order to find the one that is closest to reality. Finally, this paper analyzes causes of rising income inequality. By distinguishing effects of market mechanism from those of government policy, we concluded that the government policy made a greater contribution to rising income inequality in China’s transition.},
