This paper deals with the issue of factors influencing HRM practices in the development of competent workforce at two Japanese multinational companies (JMNCs)of Malaysian electric and electrical industry. This qualitative study applied longitudinal and comparative analysis on covering the period from 1980 to 2006. Findings show that despite unique culture and distinct characteristics of parent companies,during the process of adaptation and assimilation of technology, JMNCs subsidiaries adopted Japanese HRM system and continuously made improvement to fit the changing corporate strategy and competitive business environment.
