 note = {Bohai coastal area has been attention of foreign-affiliated firms are expected to play more important role in regional development under the continuing globalization, the linkage between foreign-affiliated firms and local firms is not reasonably strong in the Bohai coastal area. The present study firstly examines the area's basic economic environment and identifies the advantages and disadvantage for further industrial development. Secondly, it looks into the inter-firm relations between the foreign-affiliated firms and local firms in the selected cities of the Bohai coastal area by way of interview surveys to the managers. The survey found that the linkage is becoming in the electronic industry for the domestic market, but still to be developed both in the electronics industry for export market and in the automobile industry for the domestic markets. This study found, firstly that the role played by foreign-affiliated films in fostering local industries were difficult between the firms producing for export market and the firms producing for domestic markets, and secondly that the an appropriate competition between foreign-affiliated firms and local firms will have a high probability of contributing to the industrial development in this area.},
