Most Islamic families in Lingxia city still follow the traditional gender division of labor whereby the husband earns a living “outside” while the takes care of housework and children “at home.” Full time homemakers and women employed outside the home expressed different expectations towards their husbands. Most full time homemakers hoped their husbands would “support the family financially,” ”listen to my (the wife’s) views,” and “respect me.” In contrast, the women working outside the home hoped their husbands would “understand and support my work,” “help with housework,” and “help with childcare.” As for their consciousness as wives, both those working outside the home and those working as full time homemakers reported that a wife should “respect her husband,” “cheer up her husband when he is tired from work,” “do housework,” “be good life would act as a traditional “good wife and wise mother,” as follows: “respect me (husband),” “obey me,” “do housework,” “be earnest about childcare,” “look after our parents,” “be a kind women,” “make amends generously when she makes a mistake,” and “be devoted to her household.” As seen above, in all the four fields of education/culture, employment/work, household/life/health, and public life, the status of Hui women in Linxia city is not high. However, with both the women’s own consciousness and the men’s support, improvement of Linxia city Islamic women’s status may take time but is certainly possible.}, pages = {153--169}, title = {夫婦関係からみたイスラーム女性の地位―中国甘粛省臨夏市の回族社会を事例として―}, volume = {36}, year = {2008} }
