 note = {This paper investigated pragmatic transfer by Chinese national when speaking Japanese, by analying frequency of semantic formulas. Participants were advanced learners of Japanese, all of whom had passed level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and are currently residing in Japan. Data was collected by using a Discourse Complete Test. A total of 215 significant responses were obtained from 49 native Japanese speakers, 59 native Chinese speakers, and 107 Chinese learners of Japanese. The responses of the Chinese learners of Japanese were compared with the responses of the native speakers of Japanese and Chinese in terms of frequency of  semantic formulas, and differences in expressing politeness were identified. Results showed that pragmatic transfers appeared in the semantic formulas of hesitation maintaining the relationship, sympathy, requirement, interjection, appellation, accusation,  praise and other. Further, a distinctive interlanguage, with characteristics different from both native language and target language was identified in the semantic formulas of reason, apology, alternative plan, faltering and making brief responses while listening.},
