Generally, round eave tiles were produced by assembling separately-made antefix and round tile. On the other hand, those of molding method were single-piece tiles made with specially-shaped mold. This method is supposed to be employed for the first time in Heijo Palace around 730 A.D., and it was also used in the provinces in the middle of the 8th century, when the provincial temples were constructed. These tiles made by this method are classified according to form of mold and how clay was stuffed into the mold. There are two types of stuffing technique; “building-up” and “bending”. In Heijo Palace it is thought that “building-up” technique was replaced with “bending”. This paper studies the stuffing techniques for round eave tiles made by molding method in the regions, and it is cleared the change of the stuffing techniques occurred almost simultaneously in the center and the regions.
