 note = {The Sogoshosha Mitsui & Co., Ltd. was established in national interest following the Meiji Restoration, as a countermeasure against the Gaishos controlling the Japanese trade scene.  It played a remarkable role in Japan’s modernization as a “software of the industry”.  Mitsui began as a commission merchant and developed further at times as a venture capital, natural resources developer, industrial organizer and overseas project organizer, in answer to the needs of Japan’s modernization.  This paper scrutinizes not only Mitsui’s success story but also cases of failure from a macro-economic viewpoint.},
