内容記述 | This paper aims to account for the distribution of subjects in the history of English, by reconsidering the EPP in the light of its roles at the two interfaces, PF and LF. First, based on the distribution of subjects in Present-day English, it is proposed that the EPP should be split into the phonological (PHON) feature and the predication (PRED) feature, which are motivated by their effects on interpretation at PF and LF, respectively. Then, recasting and extending under the above proposal Alexiadou and Anagnostopoulou’s (1998) analysis of EPP satisfaction, it is argued that the “rich” verbal agreement of Old and Middle English serves to satisfy the PHON feature, but not the PRED feature of T, when it is carried to T via verb movement. This allows us to derive the freer distribution of unaccusative subjects in Old and Middle English, as well as the obligatory raising of transitive subjects throughout the history of English. As a consequence of the present analysis, the change in the distribution of unaccusative subjects is shown to be attributed to the loss of the “rich” verbal agreement and verb movement during the sixteenth century. | |||||
