内容記述 This article intends to show Benjamin Rush and Thomas Paine as enlightenment theorists. It aims to show how arguments for anti-slave trade were connected with debates for associating Africans with American community on the eve of American Independence. To consider this problem, we need to examine the works of Benjamin Rush and of Thomas Paine. As they materially insisted on injustice of slave trade, they came to recognize African’s ‘liberty’. Rush pioneered African’s ‘liberty’. Then some transitional writers who insisted on the idea of natural rights cultivated it in theory. And finally Thomas Paine changed over ‘liberty’ from privileges to rights of man. This article examines the meaning of American liberty as it was expressed in the changing idea of Africa’s ‘liberty’.
