| 内容記述 | This paper analyzes newspaper articles from the late 1940s to 1960s reporting on the activities and achievements of physical anthropologists who studied the bones and bodies of the Ainu. The most famous/notorious scholar among them was Sakuzaemon Kodama, professor of Hokkaido University, who excavated numerous Ainu bones and preserved them as a collection for research. Newspaper articles favorably reported on the research while sometimes including photos of Ainu bones. After his death in 1970, Kaodama’s conduct was severely criticized and some Ainu asked the university to return the bones. Although a 1983 newspaper article questioned the responsibility of scholars and the society that allowed researchers to excavate, the newspapers never acknowledged or retracted the reports they had published in the past encouraging and endorsing the excavations. It can be concluded that newspapers were a part of the society that supported the inhumane conduct of scholars and were responsible for the positive representation of the scholars. | |||||
